Peruvian police have confiscated a mummified body, estimated to be between 600 and 800 years old, from a former food delivery man who had kept it at his home for 30 years. The mummy was discovered in an isothermal bag that the man had used for delivering food. The man, Julio Cesar Bermejo, claimed that the mummy, whom he referred to as “Juanita,” was his “spiritual girlfriend,” and that he took care of her and even slept with her in his room. The Ministry of Culture confirmed that the pre-Hispanic relic was a male mummy of at least 45 years old, wrapped in bandages and found in the eastern area of Puno, a region in the Peruvian Andes
The police found the remains in Bermejo’s bag while he was hanging out with friends in a park in Puno, but he denied that he was trying to sell the mummy, stating that he was carrying it around because his friends wanted to see it. The culture ministry took possession of the mummified body to protect and preserve it as a part of Peru’s heritage, known for its rich archaeological sites and objects, including the famous Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.
